Aquila Private Game Reserve
We are very pleased with the work Stephen Bursey Thatching did at Aquila Private Game Reserve. They were responsible for various roof renovations, and the thatch roof crowning our massive new restaurant.
I have found the company passionate in their trade and they are always willing to make suggestions regarding architectural roof design to accommodate the natural beauty of the surrounding Karoo landscape, and enhance the quality of the space.
They are especially passionate in personally overseeing the construction of the truss structure. When problems occur they are sorted out practically with me, the architect, and Stephen Bursey’s project manager Nigel King. This enhanced good communication between all on site parties.
The thatching team under his leadership was always punctual, professional and reliable and worked a full day in soaring Karoo temperatures, completing the roof very efficiently.
Stephen Bursey Thatching is certainly a company that one can rely on to complete a project according to the design, and specifications.

Chenna Properties
I own Chenna Properties which is a construction company and we have been using Stephen Bursey Thatching for the past 5 years.
In Stephen Bursey Thatching the quotes are prompt, and the starting date once set has never been changed. This has ensured that my projects run on time which assists me an enormous amount when planning projects.
When the pole structure is erected, Mr. Bursey is personally seen on site and up in the rafters working on a hands on principle thus ensuring that we receive the best possible result.
Thereafter, when the grass thatchers are brought onto site, the supervision is again of a high standard and the quality of the grass (as well as the very thick grass cover) has always ensured that we receive an excellent quality product.
After each roof has been completed, all queries or snags have been attended to very promptly.
I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the Stephen Bursey Thatching Team.

Gondwana Game Reserve
Steven Bursey Thatching has thatched 2 main lodges (one with 14 individual rooms) on Gondwana Game Reserve. Both projects were done with top professionalism, attention to detail and great efficiency. In fact they are one of the few contractors we worked with who met their deadlines with ease. Their follow up is impressive as well. We are extremely pleased with the quality of the thatching and will always use them in the future as they are a pleasure to work with.

We were appointed to construct a new bush lodge at Gondwana Game Reserve, west of Mossel Bay in March, 2009.
We called for tenders on the thatched roof, and as the most competitive tenderer with a solid reputation, we duly appointed Stephen Bursey Thatching for the supply and erection of the thatched roof and pole structure.
As a sub-contractor, Stephen Bursey were a pleasure to deal with, their work was well supervised, they made and met their promises, with the end result that the finished product was of a quality that we as quality home builders are proud of.
We would not hesitate to recommend them to any prospective client.

Our Materials
The pole selection and truss structure is arguably the most important factor in any thatched roof, followed by the quality of the thatching material used. The application and consistency of the thickness of the thatched roof, is another vital aspect.
The span of the roof truss structure determines the diameter of pole selection. Great care is taken in this regard and weight bearing poles are ordered accordingly (the wider the span the thicker the poles). All pole diameter specifications are written into our quotation.
There are various species of thatching materials available and suitable for roofing. The most popular being Cape Dekriet and Hyperhinia Herta. We use both varieties and are able to advise on the correct application taking the existing climate conditions for each region into consideration.
- thatch thickness is generally 170-200mm. We advise replacing the treated twine by using non-flammable galvanized or stainless steel wire to attach the thatch to the roof structure.
- all poles are treated and SABS approved to meet the Code 475 specification. All trusses, tie beams, king posts and bracing are bolted together using galvanised threaded rods - nut ends can be countersunk and plugged.
- laths are also treated and reasonably straight and clean in accordance to the size.
timber pole varieties include Poplar, Pine and Gum (Eucalyptus), again taking regional climatic conditions into consideration.
- we highly recommend the installation of the SABS approved Fire Retardant Blanket to all buildings unless instructed to the contrary by the client or architect. The fire blanket also provides a screen against dust and is not visible from the inside of the building.
- a fully automated sprinkler system is available, with a back-up manually operated system. This is provided on request.
- additional opening or non-opening skylight windows can be installed for extra ventilation and light.
- all cement ridges are completed with a water-proofing sealant.
A thatched roof is a wonderful lifestyle investment - providing years of pleasure.
Thatching is eco-friendly and certainly applies to the policy of sustainable development and construction. A thatched home provides wonderful ventilation and insulation.
